About the museum
Nordkapphallen is the visitor centre on the plateau at North Cape on Magerøya, at 71 degrees north. The building was erected in 1988 and houses a café, restaurant, gift shop, post office, cinema and exhibitions. The plateau has been a destination since King Oscar II visited the site in 1873 and had an obelisk erected, which is regarded as the start of modern tourism to North Cape.
The exhibitions are partly in a corridor carved into the rock beneath the main building. Here 3D presentations tell the history and culture of North Cape. The small Thai-museet commemorates King Chulalongkorn’s visit in 1907 with photographs and objects from the journey. In the Lysgrotten, a multimedia installation recreates the northern lights and the Arctic light, so that guests can experience them whatever the weather.
The panorama film is shown on three screens and takes guests through the nature and atmosphere of North Cape. St. Johannes chapel was built inside the rock in 1990 and seats fifteen people; the music in the chapel was composed by Jan Garbarek. The chapel can be used for weddings and christenings.
