About the museum
Nordkappmuseet in Honningsvåg is a coastal culture and fisheries museum and at the same time the local history museum for North Cape Municipality. Since the museum reform it has been a department of Museene for kystkultur og gjenreisning i Finnmark IKS (Museums for Coastal Culture and Reconstruction in Finnmark). In spring 2017 the museum moved to Holmen 1, right by the Hurtigruten quay, where the exhibitions are spread over two floors.
The permanent exhibition tells of life along the coast of Finnmark, with North Cape and Magerøya as the starting point. On the ground floor is the reception and information about the first people who settled in Finnmark and on Magerøya. A separate area covers the destruction during the Second World War and the reconstruction of Honningsvåg. The exhibition is interactive, has many objects and suits both children and adults. In addition, changing art exhibitions are shown.
The collections consist of historical objects, photographs, art objects and archive material from businesses and volunteers. The objects mainly show material culture along the coast of Finnmark in the post-war and reconstruction period, with a few older items. The collections are made available on DigitaltMuseum. Nordkappmuseet is also responsible for the Tirpitz site and Brødrene Isaksens patentslipp (the Isaksen Brothers’ patent slipway).
