Sjøhuset på Utsira

Restored boathouse on Utsira with fishing gear and equipment from the herring fishery between 1870 and 1950; open on Saturdays in summer.

Opening hoursAdmission NOK 50

About the museum

The boathouse on Utsira was the base for the fishing operations of Mikal L. Klovning. The activity was mainly linked to the herring fishery, but also included saithe, mackerel and lobster. The house, and the gear still stored there, show how fishing was carried out between 1870 and 1950.

The boathouse was built after the breakwater in Sørevågen was completed in 1870. The breakwater structures at Norevågen and Sørevågen were among the first state breakwater structures in the country and made the harbour safe for the fishing fleet. The boathouse belonged to the Klovning farm, and the crew lived in the crew loft for as long as the fishing lasted, with sleeping places for 18 men.

The boathouse was locked around 1955, and the gear was left behind. The museum has been responsible for its upkeep since 1982, and the building was restored in 2017. Utsira historielag (local history society) hosts visitors in the summer. The boathouse is part of Haugalandmuseet.
