About the museum
Stjørdal museum Værnes is an open-air museum by Værnes church, about two kilometres from Stjørdal centre. The centre is the old Værnes rectory, a restored timber building from around 1820 that shows older building methods and is furnished with furniture from the last three hundred years. The museum turns 70 years old in 2026.
In Hæsjgata there are several older houses that have been moved from Stjørdal centre, among them Ingebrigtsengården, a typical craftsman's house, Bernhards Minde from 1878–79 and Iversengården from 1905. Also part of the area are a tenant farmer's house, a barn and a rectory garden (prestegårdshage) that is over 200 years old and has recently been renewed with a water mirror, a bridge and a fountain. The garden has a seter house, a play room (lekestue), a smithy and a herb garden.
The Bergkunstsenteret (rock art centre) presents rock carvings in Stjørdal through the exhibition “Tegn i tiden” (Signs of the Times). The medieval Værnes church from around 1140 lies only a hundred metres away and is included in guided tours in summer. The museum is part of Museene Arven and lies along the pilgrim route to Nidaros.
