About the museum
The museum is in Sjøbygda in Selbu and was built up by the couple Anne Helene and Jan Erik Steen. It began with a large collection of radios that became too big for the family’s home in Trondheim. In 2005 they bought the farm Eggen Østre by Selbusjøen, and the radio museum opened there in 2006. The television museum came in 2015, and the complex has since grown with several more buildings.
The radio museum shows Norwegian radio history from 1890 to 1980 with period images, music and radio programmes. It places particular emphasis on the major Norwegian manufacturers Tandberg, Radionette, Salve and Edda Radiofabrikk, and the Edda factory in Trondheim is especially well documented. The television museum has equipment from the early years of television, and together with Teknisk Museum it has taken over much of NRK’s historical equipment. A new studio of the same size as NRK’s first television studio opened in 2021.
Outside the museum stands a true copy of the world’s largest radio, the Radionette Symfoni 3D, which plays music. During the season there is a café in the museum, and theme evenings and concerts are arranged.
