About the museum
Trondhjems Sjøfartsmuseum was founded in 1920 and since 1967 has been housed in Brattøra hovedvakt, a listed masonry building from 1784 that is also known as “Slaveriet” or Brattørvakta. The building has served as a guardhouse for the harbour area, a prison, a customs office, an isolation ward for diphtheria patients and a warehouse for Det Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskap (the Nordenfjeldske steamship company). It is owned by Trondheim Havn (Trondheim Port).
Since 1 January 2020 the museum has been a subdivision of Sverresborg Trøndelag folkemuseum within Museene i Sør-Trøndelag (MiST). The museum tells the story of Trondheim's trading tradition and of the age of sailing ships from the 17th century to the present day. The collection includes several hundred ship paintings, around a hundred ship models and some sixty half models from Trondhjems mekaniske Værksted, as well as navigational instruments, charts, ship registers and crew lists. More than 2,300 objects can be viewed on DigitaltMuseum.
Since 2015, MiST has operated the historic steam sailing ship SDS Hansteen from 1866, which offers summer trips on the Trondheimsfjord. The museum also has its own children's museum and an ongoing artist project.
