About the museum
Stokke Bygdetun was started in 1978 and is the oldest local history museum (bygdemuseum) in Vestfold. Stokke Historielag (local history society) and volunteers run the museum, and Sandefjord municipality provides operating support.
The main building, Hauganhuset, was built in 1740 in Arnadal and moved to the museum in 1978. The house is furnished as a prosperous farm around 1900. On the ground floor, crafts, shoemaking, shipping and whaling are displayed, and on the top floor textiles, housework and linen production. Bjerkneshuset from 1892 has an old-fashioned classroom, a children's museum with dolls and toys, and an old-fashioned general store (landhandel).
On the farmstead there is also a smithy with courses and demonstrations, a carriage shed with vehicles, sledges and harness, and an exhibition on trotting (travsport) in Stokke, a crafts room for weaving, a museum barn (låve) with agricultural and local history, and a brewhouse (bryggerhus) with a bread oven that is used on selected days.
