About the museum

Midgard vikingsenter opened in 2000 and is Vestfold’s centre for the Viking Age. The centre overlooks the Borre mounds, which form the largest collection of monumental burial mounds from the Merovingian and Viking periods in Northern Europe. Borre is also known as one of the places in Vestfold where major Viking Age finds have been made, together with the Oseberg ship in Tønsberg and the Gokstad ship in Sandefjord.

The Gildehallen is a reconstruction of a royal hall from the Viking Age. It was completed in 2013, after remains that may come from such a hall were found on the site in 2007. The centre emphasises experience-based learning, where visitors get to try out what they learn about, and knowledgeable guides lead through the exhibitions, Borre park and the Gildehallen.

The centre also has a Viking playground, farm animals including Viking hens, and Borre National Park nearby. Midgard collaborates with Oseberg vikingarv and is run by Vestfoldmuseene IKS.
