About the museum
Tungenes lies at the northern end of Jæren, where all sea traffic passes just before it reaches Stavanger. The lighthouse was established in 1828 at the initiative of both townspeople and herring fishermen. Some candles in an attic window in Tungevågen had previously lured fishermen into Stavanger, and the herring brought the town great income. The lighthouse was later upgraded and modernised and gradually became an important navigation mark for all shipping in the area.
After the last extension in 1959 the site consists of four buildings: the lighthouse building, the lighthouse keeper's house, the staff house and a storage building. In 1984 the lighthouse was unmanned and replaced by a light on the skerry Bragen offshore. Tungenes fyr is part of Kystverkmusea, the agency museum of the Norwegian Coastal Administration, and has museum responsibility for the Coastal Administration's 2nd district, with a particular focus on the traffic control service and pilotage (los).
At the lighthouse visitors can see the environmental exhibition in the keeper's house, the Sjøbruksmuseet in Tungevågen and the Sørreimesamlinga (the Sørreime Collection). The café in the staff house serves waffles, cakes, ice cream and hot and cold drinks. Many visitors combine the visit with a walk in Tungevågen and the surrounding nature.
