About the museum

Utstein kloster lies on Mosterøy in Rennesøy and is the best preserved medieval monastery in Norway. The site is fully protected and lies beautifully by the sea. It is today part of Museum Stavanger (MUST).

In the monastery there are exhibitions on monastic life in the Middle Ages, on Magnus Lagabøter (Magnus Lawmender) and the vulnerable in society under the title “Miserabiles Personae”, and on the botanical work Flora Danica and the Flora Danica service (porcelain). The Garmann rooms (Garmann-stuene) are also part of the site.

The monastery is open every day in summer and on Sundays in spring and autumn, and it is closed in winter except for the Christmas market. Concerts are also held. The church is used for baptisms and weddings, and Utstein Kloster Hotell is nearby.
