About the museum
Villa Stenersen in Oslo was designed by the architect Arne Korsmo in the years 1937–1939 for the financier and art collector Rolf E. Stenersen. It is regarded as a major work of Norwegian functionalism. The design took account of the art collection: in the living room, which on the drawings is called the gallery hall (gallerisalen), the whole façade is glass, and originally a selection of paintings by Edvard Munch hung here.
Stenersen gave the villa to the state in 1974 as the prime minister’s residence, but only one prime minister, Odvar Norli, lived there. From 2000 the house was a centre for the mediation of design and architecture under Norsk Form, and in spring 2014 the National Museum (Nasjonalmuseet) took over the professional responsibility for the mediation. The villa and garden are protected by Riksantikvaren (the Directorate for Cultural Heritage) and are being gradually restored.
Villa Stenersen and Gustav Vigeland’s flat in the Vigeland Museum are the only Norwegian homes in the international network Iconic Houses. The villa is currently closed for restoration.
