About the museum
The museum was started by Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab (DKNVS, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters), founded in 1760, which is the oldest scientific institution in Norway. In 1926 the society was reorganised as both an academy and a museum. After the University of Trondheim was established in 1968, the museum was transferred to the university on 1 April 1984, and since 1996 it has been part of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Ringve Botanical Garden was opened as a university garden in 1973 and added to the museum in 1981. The museum today is responsible for cultural heritage management in Central Norway, with archaeological investigations and the conservation and preservation of objects. It houses the Institutt for naturhistorie (Department of Natural History), the Institutt for arkeologi og kulturhistorie (Department of Archaeology and Cultural History) and the national laboratories for dating.
The exhibitions in the museum's public areas, in the yellow building Gunnerushuset, are closed to the public while they are upgraded with better security and climate control. The museum probably reopens in 2030. During the closure the public can visit the exhibition Kirken under gaten (the Church Under the Street), the Middelaldermyntene under banken (the Medieval Coins under the Bank) and Ringve Botanical Garden.
