About the museum

The Poznań Archdiocesan Museum is one of the oldest institutions of this kind in the country. It was founded in 1898 by Archbishop of Gniezno and Poznań Florian Stablewski, to gather and secure objects of artistic and historical value from the churches of the archdiocese. Its first seat was in the former convent of the Carmelite nuns on ul. Wieżowa.

For decades the museum struggled with a lack of space and funds. In 1923–1924 the collections were handed over to the state on deposit and a Museum of Church Art was set up in the former Imperial Castle (Zamek Cesarski), but in 1929 the deposit was withdrawn and the museum was closed. After the war the collection was looked after by the Archdiocesan Archive, and the solemn opening of the museum with the old collections in a new guise took place on 13 September 2007.

At present the institution operates on Ostrów Tumski, in the building of the former Lubrański Academy, about 100 metres from the cathedral. Visitors can see a gallery of medieval art, a treasury with works by goldsmiths, a gallery of modern art with a gallery of portraits, and the Salon of Donors (Salon Ofiarodawców).
