About the museum

The Centrum Dialogu Przełomy is a branch of the National Museum in Szczecin. It is located under Plac Solidarności, on the site where the protests in Szczecin took place in December 1970. The venue was co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund in 2007–2013.

The permanent exhibition “Miasto protestu – miasto sprzeciwu” (City of Protest – City of Dissent) covers the years 1939–1989 and tells the story of Poland’s path to freedom and its price. The tour begins in a dark entrance, meant to recall a “well of history”, and then leads through further thematic spaces: wartime Stettin, forced labour and resistance, the Soviet presence, the new border and resettlement, Stalinist terror, the thaw of 1956–1968, December 1970, the Gierek decade, Solidarity, martial law and the underground, the port strike of 1988, the Round Table and the transformations of 1989.

The exhibition is supplemented by interactive information kiosks, films and multimedia tables, and in the section on migration visitors see a railway carriage with listening stations. The centre also runs museum lessons, competitions and materials for teachers.
