About the museum

The Muzeum Historii Szczecina is housed in the Gothic Old Town Hall (Ratusz Staromiejski), whose origins go back to the middle of the 13th century. The star vaults in the cellar date from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries and are attributed to Heinrich Brunsberg. The building suffered during the sieges in the Swedish period, and at the beginning of the 18th century it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Until 1879 it was the seat of the city authorities.

The town hall was destroyed in the Second World War. It was one of the few monuments selected for reconstruction after the war, and the work was completed in 1975, after which it was handed over to the museum.

The permanent exhibitions present the history and culture of Szczecin from the earliest times, illustrated by archaeological finds, through the Ducal, Swedish, Prussian and German periods, up to the post-war Polish period and the end of the 20th century. In front of the building stands the sculpture “Wielki łuk” (Great Arch) (1991) by Bernhard Heiliger, on loan from the Bernhard Heiliger Foundation in Berlin.
