About the museum
The Morskie Centrum Nauki im. prof. Jerzego Stelmacha w Szczecinie (Jerzy Stelmach Maritime Science Centre in Szczecin) was established by councillors of the Zachodniopomorskie Regional Assembly on 12 September 2017. Its patron is Professor Jerzy Stelmach of the University of Szczecin, an astrophysicist and cosmologist, popularizer of science and director of the Institute of Physics, to whose legacy the institution refers.
The main theme of the centre is the sea, which makes it possible to present topics from physics, mathematics, astronomy, geography, technology, ecology and history in an attractive way. Phenomena are illustrated with examples connected with shipping, waves, wind, fishing and port life. The institution is based on the maritime economy and the history of West Pomerania.
The heart of the centre is an exhibition consisting mostly of interactive, self-service exhibits, at which visitors carry out experiments themselves. These are complemented by original objects, such as parts of vessels, sailing tools and instruments, models, scale models and maritime souvenirs. The building also houses a planetarium, educational workshops and an observation terrace on the roof.
