About the museum
The Centrum Konserwacji Wraków Statków (Centre for the Conservation of Ship Wrecks) together with the Magazyn Studyjny (Study Store) in Tczew is the newest branch of the Narodowe Muzeum Morskie (National Maritime Museum) in Gdańsk; it was built in 2016. The building stands in the city centre, next to the Muzeum Wisły (Museum of the Vistula), on the site of the museum’s former conservation workshop, which had been housed in a building that was once a factory workshop. The project cost over PLN 22 million; 85% came from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, and the rest from the budget of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. It was carried out in cooperation with two Norwegian institutions from Oslo.
The modern building was designed by the FORMA architekci studio under the direction of Aleksandra Wojtczak-Duch. Two interpenetrating volumes correspond to the division into the Conservation Workshop and the Study Store, and the form refers to the neighbouring 19th-century industrial buildings. The interiors were designed on the principle of openness, so that visitors can observe the museum’s daily work.
The Study Store presents structural elements and artefacts from wrecks investigated by the Dział Badań Podwodnych (Underwater Research Department), including a sixteen-metre keel, a fragment of a hull, an anchor and part of the cargo from a fifteenth-century wreck called “Miedziowiec”. One wall is taken up by a collection of dugout canoes, boats and kayaks, and the hall holds historic yachts, among them “Opty” by Leonid Teliga, “Dal” by Andrzej Bohomolec and the welded “Kumka IV” from 1937.
The Conservation Workshop is equipped for the conservation of waterlogged archaeological wood and metal, and has an X-ray room and large boatbuilding and blacksmith and locksmith workshops. Visitors can watch the successive stages of conservation, and an augmented reality app lets them learn about the artefacts and even virtually conserve them.
