About the museum
The Muzeum Zamkowe w Malborku (Malbork Castle Museum) was founded on 1 January 1961 as a cultural institution subordinate to the Minister of Culture. It is housed in the medieval castle of the Teutonic Order, which from 1309 was the seat of the Grand Masters. In 1457 the castle passed under the administration of the Polish kings, and after the First Partition in 1772 it came under Prussian rule.
In the 19th and 20th centuries the building was adapted into barracks and warehouses, and was later subjected to major conservation works. The castle was seriously damaged towards the end of the Second World War. Reconstruction and research continue to this day, and one of the exhibitions is devoted to the two-hundred-year history of the building's conservation.
The museum's collections number more than 40,000 objects. They include sculpture, painting and applied arts, as well as an armoury, an amber collection and stained glass. Visitors can see the High Castle (Zamek Wysoki), the Middle Castle (Zamek Średni), the interiors and permanent exhibitions, as well as the castle grounds, moats and defence walls. The museum also runs branches in Kwidzyn and Sztum.
