About the museum
The cottage in Orłowo, a former fisherman's hut, was the residence of the writer Stefan Żeromski with his family in the summer of 1920, from May to September. Żeromski observed the construction of Gdynia at the time, made numerous trips around the area and met other writers, including Jan Kasprowicz and Jan Lechoń; in Orłowo he wrote the novel “Sambor i Mestwin”.
After the Second World War the building was used as a dwelling until 1985, and then it stood empty. The renovation was initiated by the Society of Friends of Orłowo (Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Orłowa), which, with the help of volunteers, renovated the house and opened it on 26 April 1997. In November 2000 a museum exhibition was opened in the cottage.
On the upper floor there is the exhibition “Life and Work of Stefan Żeromski” (Życie i twórczość Stefana Żeromskiego), with photographs, copies of manuscripts, letters, documents and information boards, as well as a small library of old editions of his works and interiors furnished in the style of the period. On the ground floor there is a café with archival photographs of Orłowo and Gdynia and panels on the writer's life. The house is also the seat of the Society of Friends of Orłowo and a venue for literary meetings, exhibition openings and concerts.
