About the museum

Artus Court was built in 1348–1350 by the Confraternity of St George, a group of knights from wealthy German families. It was first mentioned in 1357 as “curia regis Artus”. A fire destroyed the building in 1476–1477, and the reconstruction was financed by the town council. The first beer was poured in the new building on 2 December 1481.

In the following centuries the court was shared by the guilds (ławy), that is the merchant and craft brotherhoods, and from 1530 open court hearings were also held here. In 1742 the town council converted the building into an exchange. Until 1945 it remained a centre of city life, and the war brought the greatest destruction in Gdańsk’s history to the building.

The interiors are today partly reconstructed. Surviving original objects have returned to the court, and missing elements have been replaced with reconstructed sculptural details and large-format prints. Besides the Great Hall, visitors can see a painting gallery on the second floor. The court is a branch of the Muzeum Gdańska, and its halls are also used for city and state ceremonies.
