About the museum

The Historical Zone Free City of Gdańsk is a branch of the Gdańsk Society of Friends (Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Gdańska) and is run by history enthusiasts who are interested not only in political history but above all in everyday life. It shows objects made in the area of the former Free City of Gdańsk, and mementos and artefacts from the best-known industrial and manufacturing plants.

The museum opened in June 2009 in three rooms after a leather goods factory at ul. Piwna 19/21, where more than five hundred exhibits were shown, including a safe weighing over a tonne from the firm of Emil Krause, produced in the Free City. After three years they were moved to premises at ul. Długi Targ 25/27 near the Green Gate (Zielona Brama), and the number of exhibits grew to almost one and a half thousand.

The collections include a large collection of Gdańsk bottles from spirits and beer and a unique collection of models of Gdańsk trams. In the new seat a room has been set up devoted to the Gdańsk Poles. The museum runs history lessons about life in Gdańsk in the 1920s and 1930s, and thematic events, for example live cooking according to recipes from the ‘Gdańska książka kucharska’ (Gdańsk Cookbook).
