About the museum

The Ratusz Głównego Miasta (Main Town Hall) stands at the junction of ul. Długa and Długi Targ. Its origins go back to the late Middle Ages, and from the mid-14th century until 1921 it was the seat of the city authorities. The Gothic-Renaissance building preserves one of the most beautiful Renaissance halls in Northern Europe, and from the 80-metre tower there is a panoramic view of Gdańsk in summer.

The Town Hall is a branch of the Muzeum Gdańska, which manages many sites in the city: Dwór Artusa (Artus Court), Dom Uphagena (Uphagen House), the Muzeum Bursztynu (Amber Museum), the Muzeum Poczty Polskiej (Museum of the Polish Post), the Muzeum Nauki Gdańskiej (Gdańsk Science Museum), the Zespół Przedbramia (Przedbramie complex), Wartownia nr 1 na Westerplatte (Guardhouse No. 1 on Westerplatte), Twierdza Wisłoujście (Wisłoujście Fortress) and the Kuźnia Wodna in Oliwa (Water Forge in Oliwa).

In the Town Hall you can see, among others, the Wielka Sala Wety, the Sala Czerwona (Red Hall) with the painting “Apoteoza Gdańska” (Apotheosis of Gdańsk), the Kamlaria and an exhibition recreating a Gdańsk street, as well as the oldest doors in Gdańsk, dungeons and hidden passages. The Galeria Palowa is also open to visitors.
