About the museum
The Etnograficzne Muzeum Misyjne (Ethnographic Mission Museum) is housed in the monastery of the Christus Rex Missionary Congregation (the White Sacred Heart Fathers) in Polanica-Zdrój. The congregation took over the nineteenth-century building in 1927 and converted it into a mission house. The museum has been open since 1977.
The collection of around 1,000 exhibits was brought back by missionaries who worked, among other places, in the Congo and Mozambique, Peru and Ecuador, French Polynesia and Tahiti, and on Easter Island. It includes costumes, ornaments, musical instruments, sculptures and everyday objects.
In front of the building stands, since 1994, a monument to Blessed Damian de Veuster, a missionary who died of leprosy, and a plaque on the façade commemorates the stay of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński at the monastery in 1959.
