About the museum
The idea for a matchbox museum was born in 1961 on the initiative of the Bystrzyca Enthusiasts’ Club, residents of the town and representatives of the local match factory. The official opening took place on 19 July 1964. The name refers to the former safety match factory in Bystrzyca Kłodzka, which residents called “Bystrzycka Zapałka”.
The museum is housed in a building from 1823, whose design was approved by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The collections document ways of making fire: they include fuse, petrol, gas, electric and chemical lighters, metal and flint strikers, and labels and matchbox packaging from Poland, Europe and other continents.
Apart from the philumeny collection, the institution shows exhibitions on the history of Bystrzyca Kłodzka, organises temporary exhibitions, museum lessons and workshops. Every year on the first Saturday of October the National Philumeny Fair (Ogólnopolska Giełda Filumenistyczna) takes place here.
