About the museum
The foundation was established on 16 February 1990 in Toruń as the Archiwum Pomorskie Armii Krajowej (Pomeranian Home Army Archive). In 2002 it changed its name to the Archiwum i Muzeum Pomorskie AK oraz Wojskowej Służby Polek (Archive and Pomeranian Museum of the Home Army and the Women’s Military Service). In March 2009 it adopted its present name, commemorating General Elżbieta Zawacka. Its statute lists among its aims the study of the history of the Home Army in Pomerania and of women’s military service.
The foundation is based in a building at ul. Podmurna in Toruń, in front of which stands a monument to Elżbieta Zawacka. The collections include souvenirs from the Warsaw Uprising, among them a field nurse’s bag and white-and-red armbands worn by insurgents, a reconstruction of General Zawacka’s salon and a complete set of her decorations.
Besides the archive, the foundation presents a permanent exhibition, which is followed by guided tours given by staff of the archive department of the Wojskowa Służba Polek, as well as temporary exhibitions. The collections can also be viewed online through a virtual tour of the foundation.
