About the museum
The Tony Halik Museum of Travellers (Muzeum Podróżników im. Tony’ego Halika) opened on 24 January 2003 at ul. Franciszkańska in Toruń. It is a branch of the Muzeum Okręgowe and presents souvenirs from the expeditions of Tony Halik, a Polish reporter and traveller born in Toruń, and of his wife, Elżbieta Dzikowska.
The basis of the collections is the exhibits from the expeditions that Elżbieta Dzikowska gave to the city in 1999. They include textiles and costumes from Guatemala, pre-Columbian ceramic figures from Mexico, body adornments of the peoples of New Guinea, and souvenirs from Africa and Asia, including from Namibia, Ethiopia, Gabon, China and Ladakh.
The exhibition covers several floors and leads from the story of Halik’s travels in South America, through the couple’s expeditions to Mexico and Guatemala and exhibitions on the peoples of New Guinea and Africa, to an educational room about great explorers and a closing room about Polish travellers.
