About the museum
The Galeria im. Sleńdzińskich (Sleńdziński Gallery) began as a single building, the former Cytron synagogue at 24a ul. Waryńskiego. It housed the largest collection of paintings, sculptures and reliefs by Wincenty, Aleksander and Ludomir Sleńdziński, a family of artists from Wilno (Vilnius). The donor was the harpsichordist Julitta Sleńdzińska, who gave the town the legacy of her father, grandfather and great-grandfather; her instrument, a harpsichord by Zuckermann, was one of the exhibits.
Apart from promoting the artistic family, the gallery presents the work of artists from Podlasie. It has developed into an institution with several branches: the Galeria Sztuki Współczesnej (Gallery of Contemporary Art) at 2 ul. Legionowa, the Galeria Fotografii (Photography Gallery) in a wooden boyar house at 5 ul. Wiktorii (with a garden), and a branch in the former Cytron synagogue, devoted to the history and culture of the Jews of Białystok.
In 2022 the main seat, together with the Sleńdziński collections, was moved to the town centre, to 4 Rynek Kościuszki, where since May 2022 the permanent exhibition “Sztuka w Genach. Sleńdzińscy” (“Art in the Genes: The Sleńdziński Family”) has been on show. The branch at ul. Waryńskiego shows the permanent exhibition “Relikwie” (“Relics”), featuring objects discovered in October 2022 in the synagogue’s attic.
