About the museum
The Muzeum Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Białymstoku i Pałacu Branickich (Museum of the Medical University of Białystok and the Branicki Palace) is located in the Branicki Palace, the main seat of the university and one of the most interesting Baroque residences in Central Europe, known in the 18th century as the “Polish Versailles”. It was officially opened in 2011 by the rector of the university, Prof. Jacek Nikliński. The museum cultivates the medical heritage of Białystok, which reaches back to the times of the 17th-century owners of the town.
In the palace visitors learn how an 18th-century Obstetric Institute worked, and about a German field hospital from the First World War. The collections date from the 18th and 19th centuries and include, among others, a Siemens & Halske X-ray apparatus from 1921, dental chairs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the equipment of an interwar gynaecological clinic, surgical instruments, and anatomical and pathological preparations. The exhibition engages all the senses: visitors can enter the rooms of a dentist, an ophthalmologist and a gynaecologist, an X-ray laboratory, a pharmacy laboratory and a former anatomist's workshop.
Two routes are prepared for visitors. The longer one covers the exhibition on the history of medicine and pharmacy, the multimedia display in the palace cellars, the viewing terrace and the representative rooms of the residence; the shorter one covers only the exhibition and the display in the cellars. The museum is also an educational centre for students and organises workshops for residents.
