About the museum
The collection was begun in 1906 by Włodzimierz Kulczycki, a professor from Lwów. His son Jerzy enlarged it during the interwar period. The collection survived the Second World War hidden in Warsaw; in 1964 part of it was sold to Wawel, and the rest was transported to the Podhale region.
In 1977 Anna Piotrowicz-Kulczycka donated the collection to the nation and entrusted it to the Tatra Museum. In 1981 the city handed over a building intended as a gallery to the museum. The villa was built at the beginning of the 1920s by the Kozianski family; after the Second World War it was used by the Council of Ministers, which gave it the colloquial name “Cyrankiewiczówka”. Today it also houses the administrative headquarters of the Tatra Museum.
The gallery holds 122 inventory items, mainly carpets and textiles from Asia Minor, Central Asia, Persia and the Caucasus, dated from the 17th to the mid-19th century. Because of the sensitivity of the textiles, they are shown in rotating selections, supplemented by a multimedia presentation of the whole collection.
