About the museum
The Władysław Hasior Gallery is a branch of the Tatra Museum and a gallery of the artist's own works. Hasior (1928–1999), born in Nowy Sącz, graduated from the State School of Fine Arts in Zakopane and received his diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1958. In 1959 he worked in the Paris studio of Ossip Zadkine, taught for many years at the art school in Zakopane and exhibited in Poland and abroad.
The building on ul. Jagiellońska was erected in 1935 as a wooden deckchair shed for the “Warszawianka” sanatorium, to a design by Wacław Nowakowski. Originally a two-storey structure with a glazed south side, it was converted into multi-level interiors that house exhibition rooms, a space for concerts, and the artist's flat and studio.
Hasior's works were moved from his small studio to the gallery in December 1984, and the gallery opened in February 1985. The collection consists of his famous banners, spatial compositions and sculptures made from various materials, often everyday objects or waste that acquire new meanings in his art. His metaphorical, witty titles invite reflection on the present and on art.
