About the museum
Villa Atma in Zakopane was the home of Karol Szymanowski (1882–1937), who moved in in 1930 and lived there until 1935. During this period works created here included the ballet-pantomime “Harnasie”, the Fourth Symphony, the Second Violin Concerto and the “Litany to the Virgin Mary”. The museum, a branch of the National Museum in Kraków, has operated since the 1970s; the museum’s website gives different opening dates, 1976 and 1979.
The core of the collection consists of memorabilia which the composer’s niece and heir, Krystyna Dąbrowska, handed over in the 1970s. Today the collection numbers over 2,300 objects: music manuscripts, photographs, letters, books, music publications, and works of art and craft.
In 2011–2013 the building was modernised as part of the cross-border project “Music under the Tatras” with the Orava Museum in Dolny Kubín, and facilities for people with disabilities were introduced. The exhibition on the ground floor shows the composer’s life and work, his links with Zakopane and the culture of the Podhale, and personal memorabilia, while multimedia presentations on the artist’s biography and the history of the villa complement the interiors.
