About the museum
The gallery is housed in a renovated building next to the former castle of the Bishops of Kraków, erected in the first half of the eighteenth century during the extension of the residence carried out by Bishop Konstanty Felicjan Szaniawski. The house was to serve as the dwelling of the provision steward and the laundress, and its location made access to the pond, storehouses, granaries and the farm easy. At the beginning of the twentieth century it probably housed prison cells, and after 1945 the building belonged to the Office of Public Security (Urząd Bezpieczeństwa), and later served as a warehouse.
The decision to renovate the ruined building was taken by the authorities of Kielce in 2001, after a meeting between the mayor of the city and Leszek Mądzik, artistic director of the Scena Plastyczna KUL (Visual Arts Stage of the Catholic University of Lublin). Mądzik wanted to create a museum of contemporary sacred art in his home region, and the idea was already supported in 1998 by respected representatives of the world of art, science and the Church. The gallery was opened to the public on 30 May 2005.
Three rooms on the ground floor are occupied by the collection assembled by Leszek Mądzik, while temporary exhibitions are shown in the attic, and meetings and book promotions also take place there. The gallery operates within the Dom Środowisk Twórczych “Pałac Tomasza Zielińskiego” (House of Creative Communities “Tomasz Zieliński Palace”) in Kielce, a municipal cultural institution. Artists presented in the Dom Praczki have included, among others, Stanisław Baj, Tadeusz Boruta, Tadeusz Kantor, Stefan Gierowski and Józef Wilkoń.
