About the museum
The Harcerskie Muzeum Etnograficzne (Scouts' Ethnographic Museum) has been operating since 1965. It is run by scouts of the 4th Scout Troop named after the Defenders of Katowice (IV Szczep Harcerski im. Obrońców Katowic), and it was founded by senior scout leaders Leszek Piasecki and Andrzej Kubicki.
The collections were built up during scout camps and expeditions in Upper Silesia, the Beskids, Orawa, Spisz and Kashubia. They comprise over 750 exhibits: folk costumes, everyday objects, tools and elements of folk decoration.
The exhibition is housed in the building of Primary School No. 11 at ul. Nasypowa, in the Załęska Hałda-Brynów district. Multimedia devices assist visitors, and the museum runs workshops for kindergartens and primary schools and provides educational materials for teachers.
