About the museum
The Mission Museum of the Franciscan Friars in the Katowice district of Panewniki operates at the Franciscan monastery and holds documentation, photographs and exhibits from the foreign missions of the Upper Silesian province of the order. A new exhibition hall was opened on 30 October 2003 under Provincial Fr. Józef Czura. The museum was founded on the initiative of the Secretariat for Missionary Evangelisation of the Province of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Order of Friars Minor.
In 2019, at the end of the Extraordinary Mission Month, the Franciscans reopened the museum for a second time, in a renewed multimedia form. Its originator, Fr. Dymitr Żeglin, explained that after seventeen years the exhibition had to be reworked in order to present the missions more attractively and draw in more children, young people and adults.
The collections include handicrafts and folk art brought back by missionaries from Upper Silesia from Bolivia, the Central African Republic, Tanzania, Morocco, the Holy Land, Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine, Belarus and Estonia. The interior is equipped with multimedia, and Franciscans lead visitors through the museum. The hall holds up to 25 people at a time, so it is suitable for catechesis, talks and screenings of films on missionary themes.
