About the museum
The Lapidarium belongs to the historic complex of the wooden Church of St Michael the Archangel in Kościuszko Park in Katowice, and is a permanent exhibition of the Katowice History Museum. The museum gathered its exhibits over several years, and once the collection had become historically coherent, the idea arose of showing it in the open air. The solemn opening and blessing of the lapidarium took place on 29 April 2009.
The collection includes, among others, a mining boundary stone from Upper Silesia, a granite paving stone from the area of Graniczna Street, a slab from a mass grave of Silesian insurgents and several gravestones, including one from the Józefowiec district. In 2025, during conservation works on the church complex, the lapidarium was rearranged.
The wooden church comes from Syrynia and was most probably built around 1510; in Kościuszko Park it stands together with its bell tower and fence. In 1997 the city president of Katowice decided to set up a branch of the Katowice History Museum in this complex.
