About the museum

The idea of a diocesan museum in Katowice appeared at the very beginning of the diocese, when it was planned as part of the cathedral complex. The diocese’s original collection was handed over to the Silesian Museum, because the diocese had difficulty financing the construction of the cathedral. The museum was preceded by an exhibition on religious life in Upper Silesia in 1975, and the museum’s statute was announced in 1976.

Until 1983 the museum operated on the third floor of the presbytery building. The official date of its founding is 20 November 1983, when Bishop Herbert Bednorz blessed the rooms in the right wing of the Curia where the exhibition was set up. The subsequent directors were Rev. Prof. Jerzy Myszor, Rev. Dr Henryk Pyka and Rev. Dr Leszek Makówka; the institution is currently headed by Rev. Przemysław Malinowski.

After renovation the museum acquired new permanent exhibitions: an overview of Silesian and European sacred art, one of the few permanent exhibitions of contemporary sacred art in Poland, a gallery of religious posters and prints, a cabinet from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and a chapel with a stained-glass window by Stanisław Wyspiański. Part of the collection, mainly Upper Silesian Gothic and Baroque works, has been shown by the Silesian Museum since 2015.
