About the museum

The Road Building Memorial Room was established at the Road District in Skwierzyna, which in 1979 took over the administration of state and local roads in the gmina. In 1980 an administrative and social building was erected here, and the head of the district, Stanisław Brzeziński, proposed setting up around it an open-air museum of road equipment, and a memorabilia room in the building.

The first exhibit was a former German road roller from the A. Gutmann factory in Frankfurt an der Oder; then milestones and other road-building relics joined it. Over time, stone and wooden signposts, barriers and railings, bollards, boundary markers and signs were collected. A reconstruction of the set of road signs in force in Poland in 1938 was also made.

The room displays documents, photographs, road maps and plans, measuring instruments, calculating devices, tools of road workers and carpenters, diplomas, decorations and elements of uniforms. Among the most valuable memorabilia are the German foundation record (akt erekcyjny) of a culvert in the village of Rokitno, dug up in a bottle during renovation in the 1980s, road manuals from 1922 and 1945, and a line plan of state road no. 17 from 1947. The outdoor part is also accessible outside the custodian’s working hours.
