About the museum
The Muzeum Grodu Santok has operated since 1978 as a branch of the Muzeum Lubuskie im. Jana Dekerta in Gorzów Wielkopolski. The building was renovated, and in 2020 a new narrative exhibition was opened there. In front of the entrance stands a sculpture of an aurochs (tur). Santok lies at the mouth of the Noteć into the Warta, and during the formation of the Polish state it was an important Piast stronghold, which Gallus Anonymus called the sentinel and key of the kingdom.
The permanent exhibition “Gród Santok. Strażnica i klucz królestwa” (Santok Stronghold: Sentinel and Key of the Kingdom) displays finds from excavations, reconstructions of archaeological trenches with the remains of the stronghold’s buildings, and animations showing everyday life in the medieval fortress. Visitors can see finds more than five thousand years old from the Stone Age, and thousand-year-old imports brought by merchants, including Scandinavian combs, Frisian textiles and beads of rock crystal.
The museum has the “Piaskogród” playground with rhinoceros sculptures and a replica of a skeleton. The museum organises guided tours of the stronghold site, which lies on the left bank of the Warta and can be reached only by ferry in the season, and of the right-bank town of Santok, as well as lessons, pottery workshops and outdoor games.
