About the museum
The Beekeeping Skansen in Pszczew (Skansen Pszczelarski w Pszczewie) is a private museum opened in 1989. It was created through the commitment of Tadeusz Bryszkowski, who died in 2012. It is now run by his wife, Irena Bryszkowska, and his grandson, Fryderyk Bryszkowski. For his work, the founder of the skansen received the title of Honorary Citizen of the Pszczew Commune (Gmina Pszczew).
The skansen presents the art, work and history of forest beekeeping (bartnictwo) and of modern beekeeping. Old hives and bee trees are shown, among them examples from the 19th century, as well as the tools of forest beekeepers (bartnicy) and beekeepers. The permanent display includes a dozen or so bee trees – hives hollowed out of tree trunks, decorated with carvings and topped with straw roofs.
Visitors can also see a collection of Christmas crib scenes (szopki bożonarodzeniowe) and old everyday tools. The skansen lies on the Lubusz Wine and Honey Trail (Lubuski Szlak Wina i Miodu), and Pszczew itself is a tourist centre of the Pszczew Landscape Park.
