About the museum

In 1878 the first Polish bookshop in Warmia was opened in Gietrzwałd. Its founder was the bookseller, poet, social activist and journalist Andrzej Samulowski, who initially ran it together with Stanisław Roman. After a few years the bookshop moved to a newly built house, positioned so that the basilica could be seen from its windows.

Besides books and newspapers from Polish lands, the bookshop sold devotional articles, which attracted pilgrims to the shrine. Samulowski was also a co-founder of the “Gazeta Olsztyńska”, whose first, trial issue was produced right here in 1886. During the plebiscite of 1920 the bookshop became a centre of the Polish movement in Warmia. It operated until the outbreak of the Second World War.

The house has survived to the present day and has been listed in the register of monuments since 1973. A commemorative plaque hangs on the wall of the building, and a bust of Samulowski stands in front of it. The right wing houses the Izba Pamięci Rodziny Samulowskich (Memorial Room of the Samulowski Family), which can be visited after an appointment has been arranged.
