About the museum
The Warmian Archdiocese Museum named after Bishop Jan Obłąk was opened and blessed on 12 June 2018. It was created in three historic townhouses at ul. Świętej Barbary in Olsztyn’s Old Town, next to St James’s Cathedral. The buildings owe their present form to a reconstruction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the remains in their cellars probably date back to the late Middle Ages. The renovation and adaptation of the buildings for the museum were co-financed by the Minister of Culture from the Culture Promotion Fund.
The museum occupies over 1,200 square metres and permanently presents more than 500 objects related to the history, liturgy and art of Warmia. On the ground floor, painting and sculpture from the archdiocese are displayed, including Gothic Madonnas, two Gothic altarpieces from Pęciszewo and Sokolica, and a confessional from the early 17th century from the church in Tylża. The first floor is devoted to artistic crafts, above all goldsmith’s work, with around a hundred liturgical objects, pewter and brass, vestments and liturgical books.
The second floor displays objects illustrating the liturgical, social and scholarly dimensions of the archdiocese’s history, including portraits of bishops, coins, archaeological finds from the 2nd century and the oldest printed anatomical treatise by Andreas Vesalius, from 1543. Temporary exhibitions are held in the cellar.
