About the museum

The Museum of Nature in Olsztyn was established in 2000 as one of the branches of the Museum of Warmia and Masuria. It grew out of the collections and staff of the Nature Department of that museum, formerly the Muzeum Mazurskie (Mazurian Museum), which had been operating since 1951.

Since 1982 its seat has been an Art Nouveau villa from the end of the 19th century at ul. Metalowa, which before 1945 was the manor house of the Nagórki estate (German: Bergenthal). The core of the collection consisted of German-era specimens gathered in Warmia and Masuria: 38 zoological specimens, about 300 geological exhibits and the herbarium of H. Steffen with about 460 sheets.

The collections to date include about 18,900 exhibits from zoology, botany and geology, as well as maps of Prussia from the early 20th century. Visitors can see the permanent exhibition “Animals of Warmia and Masuria”, and the museum also conducts scientific research, educational activities, temporary exhibitions and seasonal workshops.
