About the museum

The Flat-Studio of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna is a small museum set up in the poet’s flat on the first anniversary of her death, 16 February 1984. It is a branch of the Raczyński Library (Biblioteka Raczyńskich) and is located at ul. Gajowa in Poznań. To preserve a part of Iłłakowiczówna’s world, the furniture, books, everyday objects and paintings were left in place, and only a biographical and literary exhibition was added.

The display cases show, among other things, a photocopy of her certificate from an English-language course in Oxford, the poet’s first booklet, ‘Ikarowe loty’ (Icarus Flights), from 1911, and mementos of her work as a Red Cross nurse during the First World War and of her activity in state administration in the interwar period. A separate place is reserved for decorations and awards, including the diploma of honorary doctor of Adam Mickiewicz University, as well as the poet’s death mask and portrait.

The museum offers general tours for first-time visitors and themed tours, for example on the poet’s attitude to politics and history, her spiritual life or her childhood. Walks around Poznań in Iłłakowiczówna’s footsteps are also organised: in spring through the Old Town and the Imperial District, in autumn through Jeżyce.
