About the museum
The Muzeum Powstania Poznańskiego – Czerwiec 1956 (Poznań Uprising Museum – June 1956) is housed in the basement of the former Imperial Castle (Zamek Cesarski), today the Centrum Kultury Zamek (Zamek Cultural Centre), in a place connected with the events of June 1956. The castle was designed by the Berlin architect Franz Schwechten, and the residence of Emperor Wilhelm II was put into use in 1910. In 1956 the building housed the Miejska Rada Narodowa (City National Council) and was one of the places around which the protests unfolded.
The museum was opened to visitors in 2007 as a branch of the Wielkopolskie Muzeum Niepodległości (Greater Poland Museum of Independence). Following the division of this institution, from 1 January 2026 the museum has operated as an independent cultural institution, and since April 2026 its organiser has been the City of Poznań.
The permanent exhibition “Powstanie Poznańskie 1956 roku – ocalona pamięć” (The Poznań Uprising of 1956 – Preserved Memory) documents the first mass protest of society against communist power in the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). It shows about 200 photographs of the causes of the workers’ protest and of the rally of many thousands of people near the Castle, as well as memorabilia of the victims, among them that of the youngest, 13-year-old Romek Strzałkowski.
