About the museum
The beginnings of the mill in Dzierżoniów are linked to the brothers Gottlieb and Karol Hilbert, entrepreneurs from Bielawa, who in 1837 started the first steam mill in the area. In 1855, in connection with the building of a railway line to Dzierżoniów, they set up a second mill in the buildings of a former dye works. Between 1875 and 1916 the works were thoroughly expanded; among other things, a monumental water tower was built, and in 1922 a railway siding was laid. The last pre-war investment was the characteristic grain elevator.
In 1945 the mill was occupied by the Red Army, and in 1951 the Polish state took it over. After bankruptcy in 2002 it was run by a group of former employees until 2016. In November 2016 the site was taken over by the Fundacja Ochrony Dziedzictwa Przemysłowego Śląska (Foundation for the Protection of Silesia’s Industrial Heritage), which turned it into a museum.
The Hilbert Mill has preserved a complete technological line for producing flour, groats and bran from the 1930s: 32 roller mills, 19 frame sifters, brushing machines, filters and other machines. Visitors follow the entire production process across all floors, and the guide’s narration is often given by former employees of the mill. Visits take place in protective helmets.
