About the museum
The Muzeum Miejskie Dzierżoniowa was established on 1 May 2011 by transforming the Izba Regionalna that operated at the Dzierżoniowski Ośrodek Kultury (Dzierżoniów Cultural Centre). It is housed in the Cohn villa at ul. Świdnicka 30, an eclectic mansion most likely built in 1897 for Hermann Cohn, co-founder of one of the first mechanical weaving mills in Dzierżoniów.
After the Second World War the building housed, among others, a district office of the ZHP scouting organisation, the Towarzystwo Miłośników Dzierżoniowa (Dzierżoniów Friends Society) and the Ognisko Kształcenia Artystycznego (Centre for Artistic Education). Renovation and conservation work restored the former splendour of the impressive staircase with a large stained-glass window, as well as the original wainscoting and ceilings.
The permanent exhibitions show cartographic collections and documents concerning Dzierżoniów and the surrounding localities, and a collection of artefacts from the late Palaeolithic to the modern era. The Salonik Mieszczański (Burgher’s Parlour) and the Izba Sowiogórska (Sowie Mountains Room), with typical furnishings of 19th-century interiors, have a special character. The museum also displays objects of industry and crafts, including an exhibition devoted to the Dzierżoniów radio equipment factory Diora, a collection of pewter figures and an exhibition on the Polish Armed Forces in the West.
