About the museum
The Muzeum Lat 90 in Bielsko-Biała (Museum of the 90s) grew out of nostalgia for the decade in which Poland began a “new chapter” and childhood looked different than before. It started with a single cassette, a forgotten Pegasus console and a few stickers from Turbo gum packs. Then more objects were added, until the idea arose of creating a unique place devoted to the era.
The museum is in a building at ul. Damrota in the Osiedle Słoneczny estate and is based on private collections and donations from people who give devices, gadgets, clothes and furniture from the 1990s. It is run by the association “Retro Fani” (Retro Fans). The founders want to preserve the memory of that time – its style, humour and emotions – before it disappears for good, and the museum is meant to be a living meeting place and a tourist attraction for the city.
The exhibition has several parts: collections of chip and gum packaging, album cards and other children's treasures, a 1990s flat with a wall unit and a hallway, electronics, retro games and consoles, fashion, motoring and a cassette rental. Visitors can play the consoles on site; the average visit lasts about 45 minutes.
