About the museum
The Weaver’s House (Dom Tkacza) stands in Górne Przedmieście (Upper Suburb), which already existed in the first half of the 15th century and was inhabited by Bielsko cloth makers (sukiennicy). The building’s traditions go back to the 18th century; until the beginning of the 20th century it housed a cloth maker’s flat and workshop. In the second half of the 18th century the Bartke family probably lived here, in the 19th century the Bathelt family, and from 1873 the owner was Carl Nowak.
At the beginning of the 20th century the workshop of the shoemaker Antoni Polończyk operated here, until the Second World War. After the war the building served as an ordinary tenement house. In 1974 Wiktor Polończyk donated it to the State Treasury for museum purposes. After many years of conservation and reconstruction work, the house was opened to visitors in 1992, then as part of the Bielsko-Biała District Museum.
Today the Weaver’s House presents a reconstruction of the interior of the house and of the cloth-making workshop belonging to a guild master, that is, an elder of the guild, a representative of the highest guild authorities. The arrangement shows how such a house functioned at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in a period of decline of manual production displaced by mechanical workshops. Until 2020 an exhibition of folk costumes operated on the upper floor; it was closed for conservation reasons.
