About the museum

Feliks Nowowiejski, composer, conductor, organist, teacher and author of the Warmian Anthem, was born on 7 February 1877 in Barczewo, then Wartenburg. The museum’s beginnings go back to the 1950s; the official opening took place on 15 July 1961 on the initiative of local activists and museum workers, with the support of the composer’s family.

The building stands on the site of Nowowiejski’s former family home. Since 2007 the institution has operated as the Feliks Nowowiejski Music Salon and forms part of the Cultural and Library Centre in Barczewo.

The collections contain memorabilia of the composer and his family: a grand piano, an upright piano, photographs, documents, manuscripts and music prints, diplomas and personal belongings, including a tailcoat, a desk, a wardrobe and a death mask. The salon also presents memorabilia on the history of Barczewo, has a museum library and the Barbara and Andrzej Hulanicki Workshop. Museum lessons, concerts, meetings and exhibitions take place here.
