About the museum
The museum began operating in July 1960, on the day the Grunwald Monument was unveiled for the 550th anniversary of the battle. At first it belonged to a tourism enterprise; from 1963 it was a branch of the Mazurian Museum in Olsztyn, and in 1970–1975 a branch of the Museum of Folk Architecture in Olsztynek. Since 1 March 2011 it has been an independent cultural institution of the Marshal’s Office of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
The new museum building was opened on 21 September 2022. It has about 1,300 m² of exhibition space, where the permanent exhibition “Great War against the Teutonic Order 1409–1411” is shown. It combines modern multimedia with traditionally displayed objects and covers the period from the feudal fragmentation of Poland, through the causes of the war, the battle and the siege of Malbork, to the Grunwald tradition. The tour is supplemented by a 23-minute excerpt from Aleksander Ford’s film “Krzyżacy” and three other films about the battle.
On the Grunwald battlefield visitors can also see a granite monument to two knights by Jerzy Bandura and Witold Cęckiewicz, 30-metre masts with the banners of the armies of Jagiełło and Witold, the ruins of a chapel built by the Teutonic Knights in 1411, and stones from the Grunwald Monument demolished in 1939. The museum organises, among other events, the annual Grunwald Days with a reenactment of the battle and knightly tournaments.
